Based in Silicon Valley, California. Trilingual in English, Chinese, and Japanese.

She earned her preschool teaching and childcare credentials in Japan and studied Froebel theory in depth before moving to the United States. There she received her AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) international diploma and a bachelor's degree in music, served as head teacher at a Montessori school in Palo Alto, and taught piano and choir for more than ten years.

In 2007 she founded Sora Classic Arts in Silicon Valley, and since then has nurtured the children of families working at Google, Apple, NVIDIA, and other companies at the leading edge of their fields. In 2023 she opened Sora International School Tsukuba, the first Sora campus in Japan.

The Road to the Education I Believed In

Sora's education is something I shaped little by little, checking one question at a time as it arose in the classroom, while studying education both in Japan and abroad.

It goes back to my years as a preschool teacher in Japan. When something did not sit right with me, I could never leave it alone. That turn of mind is what eventually led me to build a school of my own.

What carried me through was a simple wish: to give my own children the education I could believe was best. All three of my children are Sora graduates.

The first thing I studied deeply was Montessori education. Earning the AMI international diploma and working in a Montessori school, I came to feel how much it matters for a child to concentrate alone and explore on their own.

At the same time, questions arose. Nothing but Montessori materials could be used, and there was no room for pretend play or for building a car or a house out of blocks. For a young child, becoming someone they know and building a small world of their own is surely essential. So I kept what was good in Montessori, added creative play, and held on to the Froebel early childhood education I had studied in Japan, along with the psychology beneath it and the sense of feeling at ease.

In time, as Google and Apple grew, the way people worked in Silicon Valley changed, and an era arrived in which teams build one thing together. If teaching does not change, I thought, these children will not manage in the times ahead. That is when I met the Reggio Emilia approach, in which small groups solve problems and exchange their views. I traveled to Italy, where it began, and studied it further.

I rebuilt Reggio Emilia into a form that fit Sora. A young child needs an environment where they can think and express freely, and at the same time rules and a reasonable frame so they feel secure. So I kept the Montessori frame, and added Japanese manners, built around the idea of not making others uncomfortable.

And so the Sora Method took shape, refined by watching children in the classroom and practicing, year after year. What it nurtures is SMILE, the non-cognitive skills a child needs for the times ahead.

A day at Sora is full of choosing, using your hands, talking with friends, and trying again when it does not work. How the classroom is arranged, how teachers speak, and where each language sits are all designed for that day.

Language is a tool for connecting with the world.

What we truly want to raise is a child who can go anywhere in the world and still think, try, work with others, and create something new. To grow the human strengths that the age of AI makes more necessary, not less.

That is the early childhood education Sora International Preschool sets out to offer.

Since 2007 we have watched children grow alongside many families here in Silicon Valley, a place people come to from all over the world. Working with parents from Google, Apple, Tesla, NVIDIA, and Meta, people at the leading edge of their fields, we noticed one thing.

What the early years should really build is this:

  • The ability to think for themselves

  • The courage to try without fearing failure

  • The ability to create

  • The ability to work with all kinds of people

  • The ease of connecting with people anywhere in the world

More than learning facts early, or speaking early, these were the things that carried a child forward in the years that followed. We call them human strengths. However far AI advances, they can only grow between people.

What Education Does the Age of AI Need?

As AI advances quickly, education is at a turning point. AI supplies knowledge instantly and takes on much of the work. In such a time, what lies beyond memorizing, the things only people can do, matters more than ever.

Even so, many families put their energy into reading, writing, languages, and lessons from an early age. All of it matters. But isn't there something worth growing first?

To think. To try. To say what you feel. To accept difference and work together. And to open a path forward for yourself. The early years are when the ground for all of this is laid.

So at Sora Draws Out Each Child's Strengths

What Global Education Means to Us

Sora

What we aim for lies beyond language ability. Meeting people of different cultures and backgrounds without hesitation, and being able to put your own views into words the other person can receive. Only with both can a child truly connect with the world.

How a child engages with the world is for the child to decide. What we can do is make sure that when the day comes and they think "I want to try that," language and culture are not walls. With the ground for connecting already there, the rest they can choose for themselves.

Speaking and Being Understood: Language Learned by Using It

Language is learned by using it.

Sora cares most about the moments when words get used. Words are a tool for reaching someone. Wanting to say "again!" during a ball game, wanting to play alongside a friend. Words used with a purpose settle in on their own, in Japanese as much as in English.

And it is when a child is enjoying themselves and feels at ease that they relax, and learning goes in deeply. This is why Sora cares above all about making a place that is enjoyable and comfortable to be in.
